BALANCING HERITAGE AND ATMOSPHERE IN A HISTORIC RIVERSIDE SETTING

Set along the banks of the River Moy in Ballina, the Ice House Hotel blends 18th-century architecture with modern hospitality. Our brief was to redesign the lighting for the original Ice House restaurant—once used to store fish—and the newer spa areas. The client sought a warm, atmospheric feel that also solved functional issues like poor menu visibility in the restaurant.

TAILORED ADDITIONS TO THE TRANSFORMATION

DISCOVERY & CONCEPT

We began with a detailed site survey to identify key architectural features and explore discreet lighting locations.

Existing infrastructure was assessed for reuse, helping us develop a design that respected the building’s unique fabric and history.

DESIGN & TECHNICAL PLANNING

Late-night on-site mock-ups were essential to test ideas and bring the concept to life.

Warm, angled lighting was chosen to highlight texture and form, while cooler accents subtly referenced the building’s icy past.

Integrated details and lighting controls were carefully planned to enhance ambience without cluttering the space.

CONSTRUCTION & PROCUREMENT

Close coordination with the contractor ensured smooth delivery and integration.

A Bluetooth Casambi lighting control system was supplied and installed, allowing flexible scene-setting while staying within budget.

REFINEMENT

Lighting was fine-tuned across the restaurant and spa areas to create mood and clarity.

Rechargeable table lamps added both function and intimacy, reducing the need for overhead fixtures and preserving the beauty of the barrel-vaulted ceiling.

COMPLETION, HANDOVER & AFTERCARE

Completed in 2022, the scheme delivers a warm, immersive atmosphere that celebrates the Ice House’s heritage.

The lighting enhances both the guest experience and architectural character, bridging past and present through thoughtful design.
