St. Bartholomew’s Church Dublin

DETAIL

The key with our approach to Bartholomew’s was to locate and mount fittings in sympathy to the conservation restrictions, while at the same time keeping luminaires putting all the emphasise on the interior architecture.

There were some stunning features on important viewpoints which we highlighted for lighting. The sanctuary ceiling with the six-winged angels described by Saint John in the Book of Revelation, was one, due to its incredible gold leaf designs and prominent location. The organ played an important role on this view also. We used warm colour temperatures to bring out the depth of colour of the gold and timber, while also adding to the ambience.

Our process comprised of,

  • Detailed survey and analysis of church, investigating opportunities for mounting of fittings, and existing reusable cable routes.
  • Detailed drawings showing lighting and lighting set out.
  • Design and detailing of integrated lighting.
  • Specification of lighting.
  • Management of lighting costs to ensure in line with budget.
  • Snagging and sign off.
  • Contractor liaison and management of final installation details.

FINAL OUTCOME

  • The use of hidden lighting and discrete placement of fittings to enable good light levels on the floor of the church whilst at the same time being largely invisible, led to atmospheric and dramatic accentuating the important architectural features in a sympathetic way.
