First Fix: The Exciting Milestone

We’ve reached first fix—yay! Anyone who has built a home knows this is a long road, and getting to this stage is a moment worth celebrating. From here, decisions will start coming thick and fast, especially when it comes to lighting and interior elements. At this stage, the key is to align the electrician with the lighting plan, ensuring all cable routes, drivers, switch positions, and lighting placements are mapped out. It’s also essential to determine how each lighting element is controlled—what’s switched together, what’s dimmable, and how the system will function overall. There will be plenty of questions (and a bit of head-scratching), but setting up the electrical infrastructure correctly now will pay off in the long run.

Designing for the Future

A core principle of our Healthy Lighting Home is ensuring our lighting is designed for easy upgrades. Lighting technology is evolving rapidly, and in five to ten years, we’ll have options that far surpass what’s available today. At the same time, our understanding of the impact of light on health will continue to grow. Our home isn’t static—it needs to adapt as new advancements emerge. To future-proof our lighting, we’re placing drivers in central, accessible locations, ensuring all lighting is upgradeable, and opting for circular lighting fittings that can be replaced or upgraded instead of discarded. The lighting industry has finally recognised the need for sustainable solutions, and we’re choosing fittings from manufacturers that prioritise longevity and circular design.

Smart Control for Healthier Living

We’ve also integrated a KNX lighting control system. While a control system isn’t essential for every home, we wanted one to manage our dynamic white lighting. KNX is an open protocol system, which means we aren’t tied to a single manufacturer—ensuring flexibility and access to a wide range of products and specialists in the years to come. Future-proofing isn’t just about technology; it’s about having the humility to recognise that our knowledge and understanding will continue to evolve. By planning for adaptability now, we can create a home that stays in tune with both emerging innovations and our own biological needs. 😊

Our aim is simple: to prove that human-centred lighting design can transform lives.
