Context Matters: Designing for Wellbeing

Lighting design begins long before a light is ever switched on — it starts with understanding the context of the home. The relationship between the building and its surroundings plays a key role in creating a healthy environment. Natural light, views, and how spaces are used throughout the day inform the placement of windows, lighting layers, and even furniture. By mapping out how people move through the home, we design lighting schemes that support both function and wellbeing — guiding the eye, creating comfort, and enhancing the natural rhythm of daily life.

Configuration for Natural Light Flow

Natural light is the healthiest light source available — and we’ve designed the Healthy Lighting Home to harness it at every opportunity. Daytime living spaces like the kitchen, living room, and home office are positioned to maximise daylight exposure, flooding these areas with sunlight when it matters most. Openable windows and bi-folding doors aren’t just for ventilation — they bring in Infrared and UV light, two essential light nutrients often missing in modern homes. This seamless connection between indoors and outdoors encourages a healthier living environment where the benefits of natural light are always within reach.

Orientation: Syncing with Nature’s Rhythm

The home’s orientation is carefully planned to align with the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Bedrooms are positioned to capture morning light, supporting better sleep patterns and helping to regulate the internal body clock. Workspaces are placed next to windows to boost productivity with a daily dose of daylight. These choices aren’t just about aesthetics — they’re about creating homes that work with human biology, not against it. By understanding how light affects our health, we’re shaping spaces that promote energy, rest, and overall wellbeing.

Our aim is simple: to prove that human-centred lighting design can transform lives.
